Abernethy

Abernethy

Decending from Pictish clans in the region of Perthshire c. 400 A.D., the Abernethy clan takes their name from the Pictish phrase meaning "mouth of the river Nethy".

For a more in-depth history of the Abertethys, read Glenn Abertathy's family history page.

Motto: Salus Per Christum (Salvation in Christ)

Alternate Spellings: Abernathy

How they became a sept of Clan Leslie: The Abernethy's became a sept of Clan Leslie in approximately 1315 after Robert the Bruce stripped the clan chief of his titles for siding with Edward II during Scotland's battle for independence. The titles and lands were divested to the daughters of the chief, and upon his daughter Mary marrying Sir Andrew Leslie, the lands and titles reverted to Sir Andrew, and the Abernethy's became Leslies.
